Skipping Photoshop for UI

37 Signal’s Jason Fried on why they skip building a Photoshop mockup, while designing a UI, and go right away hacking with HTML/CSS. I couldn’t agree more. However, I strongly believe that this works only with small cohesive teams. Projects that involve a large number of engineers, will invariably require a mockup UI so that the goals are clear.

    I do that almost all the time for most of the projects i work on, but thats mainly because I dont have much of visual detailing involved. But jumping directly into a production tool could be limiting the possibilities that could be explored using a prototyping tool. fireworks works best for me.

    Ofcourse, if time is a limitation, you would naturally skip the prototyping trial&error route and opt for a tried and tested technique.
